SHS 2nd Tuesday Talk “Bald Head’s Light Keepers”

Join us for the SHS 2nd Tuesday Talk to hear about Southport’s rich history and fascinating characters every second Tuesday of the month. FREE! All are welcome.

This month, Travis Gilbert, Educator & Collections Coordinator, Old Baldy Foundation, will present “Bald Head’s Light Keepers”.

Many keepers of the light called Bald Head Island home throughout the centuries. Together, the keepers and their families gathered to form Bald Head Island’s first communities at each of the island’s three lighthouses. Some keepers met their maker on Bald Head Island, such as Henry Long, who was shot and killed by his son-in-law, or Devaney Jennette, who died atop Cape Fear Light Station. Other keepers, like “Sonny” Dosher and Capt’n Charlie, became local legends. The keepers were veterans, first-generation Americans, and selfless public servants protecting mariners from the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Join the Old Baldy Foundation’s Travis Gilbert in exploring the life and times of Bald Head Island’s light keepers. Tuesday, October 13th @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am.
