The Southport Museum

The Southport Historical Society and the City of Southport have collaborated to create a family-friendly museum in the Garrison House at Fort Johnston that tells the amazing story of Southport. From the founding of “Smithville” in 1792 to the many characters and events that have shaped our city’s culture, you’ll be submerged in the rich history of Southport. Our knowledgeable docents are happy to provide a tour of the museum or answer any questions that you may have.

Have guests in town? This is a perfect stop to add to your itinerary while enjoying the downtown area. Even if you’re a local resident, you may be surprised at the interesting things that you’ll learn! 

Bringing the family? We have a fun scavenger hunt activity for our younger visitors that is a fun way to get familiar with the exhibits in the museum. 

After you’ve toured the museum, sit back and relax for a spell in our “front yard” as you watch boats, dolphins, and seabirds drift past this idyllic location overlooking the Cape Fear River.

The Southport Visitor Center

Whether you’re visiting Southport for the first time or just want to see what new activities are happening in town, you’ll find everything that you need to know in the Visitor Center. We have maps, brochures, and all sorts of helpful information on the area. Our docents can also assist you with any questions that you may have about your trip to Southport.

Our store is full of historical books, great Southport souvenirs, and cool clothing for the entire family. And, all of the proceeds from purchases made in the store go to work to help preserve Fort Johnston, so your dollars go towards a good cause too!
